This is the third in a series of hummingbird paintings I've made over the years...and the first one that places the "flower kisser" (what "beija flor" means in Portuguese, and the name used in many ayahuasca ceremonies around the world) in a landscape and vegetation. Here the sacred plant San Pedro's night-blooming flowers turn their faces to behold the radiant passage of our little friend...
"Note that the flower – with its multiple and layered invocation, a figure-ground dissolution of inside/outside that works as a snare for insect attraction – the (now self-referential) book, and the jewel share a vocation: organized, and thoroughly seductive, fluctuation."
– Richard Doyle, Darwin's Pharmacy pp.64-65
