Huge thanks to everyone at Arcosanti for their hospitality at Convergence - it was an honor to be one of the headlining musical acts in a theater I have wanted to play since 2005! 🌱
This mermaid painting was inspired by architect Paolo Soleri's visions of an integrated urban ecosystem in which everything about our modern lives returns to human-centric design in balance with natural principles. We don't have to choose between technology and nature, culture and the body - we can honor both in architecture that restores a human scale to daily life. Live where you work! Bring the intelligence of wilderness into the city! Create and cherish public spaces that allow for true community to form! 🌿
One of the Arcosanti residents on hand for this amazing tiny festival (it was no doubt the best I've seen for such a small event - enough great art and music, films and workshops for three times as many people) told me that he saw in this piece a complete and self-sufficient woman, someone who can harvest her own energy from sunlight while she rests within the void of space...sounds like the Earth herself, to me - and all the fantasies of living ships we dream will one day ferry us to other worlds. So maybe you can think of this piece as a portrait of the Earth - half plant, half animal - adrift luxuriously in the luminous expanse... 🌳
More pics from Arcosanti soon - as well as clips from the two sets I played there. Patreon supporters will get all of it for free, as always - just a small way I can show my thanks for helping me make inspiration, learning, art, love, and adventure both my way of life and my example to the world.

Dedicated to all mermaids and other strange creatures with no place in the modern world - but plenty of room in the future. Gene editing will one day make it possible for anyone to be a mermaid and I suspect that I'll know a lot of people who decide to make that (not a leap but a) dive... Meanwhile, they represent in some sense our complete selves, our aquatic origins and inner fish and animal intuition. They're also a great way to get people motivated to care about ecological conservation issues, as I discussed with Lindsay Loftin on a recent episode of Future Fossils Podcast.
